Meet the new rock garden

Our most recent project has been in the making for quite a while. (Everything around here takes several years to complete . . . ) Here it is, the rock garden. A mound of rock rubble from around the ranch, filled in with soil, topped with gravel, and accented with large stones. Finally, in late fall, we added some greenery. We’ll see how these plant choices work through the summer, then add more in the fall. Here’s a sneak peek:

This agave was shredded by the bucks in a matter of days. It's the last one I'll ever plant here. They all get shredded.

rock garden germander

Germander (teucrium chamaedrys) is the bulletproof winner around here. Beautiful — and impervious to deer, drought, and deluge.
