I’ve had zero success planting the large pots that frame the well-house garden door. In their last incarnation, they held blue plumbago, but last winter’s freezes killed them dead. I didn’t bother to replant the pots before leaving for the summer; when we returned, a lovely newcomer had made her home in one of the pots. She was pretty, and vigorous, and most welcome.

I’ve since transplanted a companion, which I harvested from the fields, in the other pot. She’s happy, too (as long as I don’t overwater her).

Can you help me? Do you know what this plant is? She looks similar to a lamb’s ear, but she’s not. She looks similar to an artemesia, but she’s not. She looks similar to a verbascum, but she’s not. She’s a wild woman, a familiar figure throughout our grasslands.

    Lavender or Sage.

Thanks, Sherry. It could be some kind of wild sage. I’ll investigate that.
